In the 1940s a jockey called Goggles McCoy asked a Maryland bootmaker for something better to race in. Israel Kroop built it — light, wide in the peripheral, and stackable, so a rider peels one off as the mud comes up. Skydivers borrowed the design a decade later. Still made in North Carolina, on some of the original machines.
